April 1,

Woke up this morning knowing I had a big day ahead. Normally, Mondays are spent lounging and reading for my art history class, but today is a special day!  I’m installing my MFA thesis show and the nerves and excitement are high. I spend all last night in the studio painting and I did not want to get up, especially since it’s 6am and I don’t need to be at school till 9am. But I got a ride to school from my partner André and received the metaphoric keys to the gallery. (They use a key pad.) Almost ready to install my work but still needed to finish painting the edges.

In the afternoon, I’m on the floor of the gallery doing math. Making sure the paintings are in place and the flow makes sense. My friend and fellow painter Macy came down to help me measure and mark where the drill holes needed to go. Thankfully she was there to triple check everything. She cut my install time in half. All the paintings went up and everything looked great. The drawing wall and lighting will be done tomorrow.

I took the train to go meet some friends in south Philly for a drink but it started to make an awful,  screeching sound and the power went out- Because of course the power went out! After a few minutes, the train turned back on and scooted to the Center City Station. I had to get off, I’ve been stuck on the train too many times to really risk this afternoon. I was tired and could not fathom being truly stuck.

My partner drove home and made dinner and we spent the rest of the evening petting our cat Donna and watching the Walking Dead. I know I am a decade late for this show, but I’m glad I’m watching it now. It’s been keeping me sane the last few months. Did some work on the computer too, I needed to complete the map for the gallery and make sure it was ready to print. Tried to make it an early night, but ended up going to bed around midnight. Aprils going to be a great month.

Suchan is excited to receive her MFA in painting and to experience life in Philly outside of school. You can keep up with her work at @katesuchanart
